Today we all piled into Big Red and drove to St. Augustine. Actually we drove part of the way, than took a ferry boat across the St. John’s river and finished by driving into St. Augustine. My brother took us on the tourist route, which brought back great memories for me.

We visited the Castillo de San Marcos fort in St. Augustine. Since the Spanish city seemed vulnerable to enemy assaults from the sea, the massive Castillo de San Marcos was constructed in the 17th Century to defend the ocean inlet that allowed entry into the bay of St. Augustine. This fort replaced nine wooden forts which had been built over the previous 100 years. The fort was built using Coquina stone (very hard stone with embedded shells). By using this type of stone, this allowed the fort to absorb the impact of canon balls. Versus cracking or braking, that typically took place in forts built with hard materials.

We than drove to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. The farm was founded in 1893 and is the home of various birds, mammals and reptiles from all over the world. The most fascinating part of the farm was the feeding of the alligators. Seeing the alligators leaping for food and hear their amazing strength as they bit into their food with powerful jaws was just amazing.
I could write so much about St. Augustine, below are some website for you to view at your leisure.
